Coursera's 2023 Global Skills Report reveals high demand from African learners taking online courses - 69% higher than in other regions. Between 2019 and 2023, 4.9 million people in sub-Saharan Africa enrolled in a course, with the median age being 34 years old. 60% of learning took place on a mobile phone, and of all learners, 35% were women.

The results point to Africa's emerging youth and shortage of cost-effective higher education on the continent. Leading nations were Botswana and Rwanda, where median ages are 23.8 and 19.4 years respectively (2023).
